The Source for Java Technology Collaboration

Java Education & Development Initiative (JEDI)

Jedi is not Jedi - > http://www.delphi-jedi.org/

For graduates leaving the school environment and embarking on a career, it’s a jungle out there. Many paths to take and indeed, many opportunities abound, but why can’t IT or CS graduates in the Philippines find a good job these days?

The market is becoming more and more global in scope. Technology is moving at the speed of light, almost. Companies require more skills and experience from the people they hire. Industry is looking to academe to fill the demand for a qualified IT workforce that will enable the Philippines to compete with the likes of India and China and attract foreign investments in software projects into our country.

Many of our college graduates today are not equipped to survive in this jungle. The demand and supply gap is widening as companies report hiring rates of as low as 5% of applications processed.

Sun Microsystems and the University of the Philippines shares the Filipino dream of our country being a powerful force in the global IT economy – a recognized provider of world-class IT products and services with a pool of talent that compete with the best in the world. The realization of this dream begins in the classroom where this talent is molded and nurtured. To produce the talent our country needs, teachers need help.

And JEDI is our answer.

What is JEDI?

JEDI stands for Java Education & Development Initiative. It is a collaborative project that aims to make high-quality, industry-endorsed IT and Computer Science course material available for free to universities and colleges in the Philippines. The course material is developed with inputs from industry and conforms to international education standards and the requirements of the Commission on Higher Education. JEDI materials and resources are developed, used and enhanced in a collaborative environment using java.net.

JEDI is a project of Sun Microsystems, Inc. and the University of the Philippines Java Research & Development Center (JRDC) and in partnership with the Philippine Society of IT Educators and various groups from the Industry Sector.

With JEDI, teachers will be equipped with the knowledge, skills and resources that will enhance their teaching, enrich the learning experience for their students and increase the competitiveness of the graduates in the local and global marketplace.

JEDI Mini-Talk

The JEDI Mini-Talk will provide the audience an overview of the project -- why such initiative is needed, how the project will upgrade the quality of Java education in Asia, and how community collaboration enhances the learning atmosphere in the academia.
