Instant Messaging

Instant Messaging has many advantages over e-mail and also the telephone. It's great for informal communication, where no archive is needed, and where it's clear that it's a interpersonal communcation only; the other team members are not interested in the content. It's also great because other than with phone, you see who is online and available (if you don't want to be disturbed, you should get used to update your state in your IM client).

We are using Jabber / Google Talk for instant messaging. They are both using the same protocols, so everybody with a gmail account can not only talk to other gmailers, but also to everyone else with a Jabber account.

Clients

There are a couple of good stand-alone applications for jabber available, plus there's an AJAX based solution, that works perfectly in a browser, also from within a corporate network.

Applications:

Browser

  • Meebo works through most company firewalls

With an additional small windows tool, called PowerMenu you can even apply stay-on-top and transparency to the meebo-browser window. When you then remove the menues and toolbars from that browser window, it looks pretty much like any other instant messanger.

Who's online?

Currently online are (account names are distributed only internal to the expert group, not to the whole internet):

  • Vincent
  • Artur
  • Gero
  • JohnW
  • Andreas
  • Razvan

Let's get closer in touch with each other!
