Telecom

A place where a lot of people lost a lot of money.

Hey, some of us lost our jobs there too!

Less flippantly, one of the most important industries driving server side Java. Telecommunications is a very demanding field, mixing real time embedded applications on hardware, with control centre software running on desktop clusters. This is a very conservative field, since the installation of a major networks is a hugely expensive affair, and your software might be expected to run for years under ever-increasing load. The gradual move from C/C++/Corba to Java emphasises the maturity of the platform - but as telecommunications is traditionally a very closed field, little of this work is visible. A more obvious growth area is the adoption of Java on mobile phones.

(This author personally has worked on telecommunications projects using J2EE on the control software, monitoring networks running embedded Java in the multiplexers.)

For an interesting overview, try reading Java in Telecommunications: Solutions for Next Generation Networks, T.C. Jepsen, 2001, Wiley and Sons, ISBN 0471498262.
