Mini-Talk Proposals and Schedule
Any java.net member is welcome to propose a mini-talk to deliver, in person, in the java.net Community Corner at JavaOne 2006 in San Francisco. A mini-talk is about 20 minutes long, with slides and (optionally) a demo.
For mini-talks that also publish a paper and abstract, we will print out the abstracts and make copies available in the literature rack in the java.net Community Corner, and we will hand copies of the abstracts scheduled for talks that day to the emcee for the keynote presentations each morning, so that the host may mention any mini-talks planned for the day that he finds of particular interest. A microphone and screen will be used for the mini-talks. You can bring your own laptop to project, or you can use a Community Corner machine to present slides you have uploaded to java.net (see step 6 below). New this year - the java.net Community Corner Pod Cast!
Directions:
- Propose a short talk or demo by adding it to the schedule below. Here are the fields for your proposal in the schedule below:
- Time is already filled out for each row.
- Mini-Talk has two parts: name of talk - by you. The name of your talk should be a link to your project website or paper that you are presenting. The "by you" part should be a link to your java.net People page. You can easilty create one if you don't have one already.
- Status column, put: "Proposed for xxxx community," where xxxx is the name of the java.net Community that you belong to (or general if your project is in no community).
- Email your community leader asking them to accept your proposal. Include whether or not you are flexible on the time to present. (For the general projects area, send the email to communitymanager@dev.java.net.)
- Wait for your community leader, who may ask questions, then accept or reject.
- accept: community leader changes the Status comment to: "Accepted by clname", where clname is a link to his/her People page
- reject: community leader notifies submitter and removes entry from wiki, clearing the space for another proposal
- Volunteer to work in the Community Corner for at least 30 minutes after your mini-talk. If you move away from the stage, and work at one of the machines in the opposite corner, you can continue conversations started with developers during your mini-talk Q&A. To volunteer to work, see the staffing schedule
- Abstract is optional, but encouraged. Upload your abstract to the 2006 Mini-talks folder and add a link of this form to your Mini-talk name in the schedule: name of talk - by you (abstract). Make sure the filename of your abstract has the word "abstract" in it so we can distinguish it from the presentations or other papers submitted for mini-talks.
- Post your presentation to the 2006 Mini-talks folder. (You can do this step after the show, but it is better practice to do it before the show, so that you can use the posted presentation if you suffer data loss during the show.)
- Arrive at the java.net Community Corner booth at least 10 minutes before your presentation to set-up.
Each talk is 20 minutes long. Need a pass to get in to JavaOne? Last year we were able to provide a limited number of Pavilion passes for non-Sun staff working to staff the java.net Community Corner. Volunteer by editing the staffing schedule below, and if you need the pass, contact the communitymanager@dev.java.net (MarlaParker).

A Picture is Worth 1000 Words
In between the mini-talks in the java.net Community Corner, we will run a slide show on the screen. In addition to showing pretty pictures of boats deploying sensors and scientists remotely checking out San Francisco Bay water quality, we'd like to show pictures of groups of developers who work together on more java.net projects, Community Leaders, screen shots (maybe?), and anything else related to java.net that our producer thinks would look good.
Log in to your java.net account. Follow this link to upload your pictures then click on "Add new file" to use the upload tool.
A Poster Can Get Your Project Noticed!
There is a large space (10' x 8') for posters on the back side of the mini-talks presentation area. We ordered a paneled backdrop because last year the crowds wandering around behind the speaker and display were visually distracting.
We can put posters up on the back side of these panels, i.e. the outside of our Community Corner. Architectural diagrams and other technical information that might catch the eye and invite developers into the Community Corner would be best. If you remember the posters the NetBEAMS?.org team had last year, that sort of architectural info is perfect.
There is also room on the back side of the three pods where we have the monitors set up. The max size for those posters is 37" x 25".
The organizers are providing us with "glue dots" to use for putting up the posters, and if for some reason that does not work, they will provide us with sticky velcro. But we expect the glue dots to work. Posters should be on poster stock, not foamcore or other heavy or stiff materials, if possible. There may be a slight curve to some of the walls.
Abstracts and Literature Welcome
Last year our literature rack was woefully empty. Again, literature does not have to be glossy, though if you do have
glossy, even commercial stuff to display, the literature rack is the most acceptable place to do so.
How about one-pagers to go with a mini-talk including the url to your project?
Community Leader and Staff Schedule: Pod Staffing Signups
This calendar shows the times that community members/leaders will be in the booth to meet and greet the community. See
also the official schedule on the JavaOne site. A good time to sign up to work is during the evening event when the Pavilion is open and full of free food.
We strongly encourage mini-talk speakers to sign up to staff a demo station immediately after their talk. That way they can
move any continuing conversations to the demo station corner, clearing the mini-talks presentation space for the next speaker to
prepare. Plus, you can reach more people who just come into the booth while you are at the demo station, in addition to those who
attended your mini-talk.
Directions: Edit this wiki to add your name to one of the time slots below. After your name, indicate the name of your project or community so that members who want to meet someone from a specific project or community will be able to figure out when they should come by the Community Corner and see you. There will be three demo stations with signage that we can swap out to indicate which community is represented, plus one general java.net sign.
Please plan to arrive 5 minutes early and leave 5 minutes late, in order to provide some overlap between shifts. The odd times
are set to match the schedule of Technical Sessions so that volunteers who want to work a shift and then attend a session can
make the schedule work.
Need a Pavilion Pass? a java.net staff shirt?
Need a pass to get in to JavaOne? We have 25 Pavilion passes for both Sun and non-Sun staff who have no other way to get in to the show floor. If you have your own pass, either Pavilion or full conference, then you do not need one of these. But if you have no other way to get in to volunteer, then add your name to the list. Sign up to work in the above table, add your name to the list below, then email the communitymanager@dev.java.net (MarlaParker) to say that you have done these things and request a pass.
Minimum guidelines for possibly earning this free pass are: be a java.net member; give a mini-talk and work a couple of shifts, or work three or more shifts. Community manager decisions related to these passes will be based on objective criteria, subjective whim, and reasoned arguments from community leaders or other java.net members who wish to advocate on your behalf.
Request a Pavilion Pass: Volunteers Name (userid, shirt size)
INSTRUCTIONS: If you want a pass, just add your name (userid, shirt size), just those three bits of data. Name, userid, shirt size. Do not add information about being registered, because only the Community Manager (Marla) can register you. If you say your are registered, when you are not, well, you can figure out the likely consequence! You just read the instructions in this paragraph, right? good.
(Notes by MARLA trying to sort out passes... 3D = three day Pavilion pass, 1D = one day Pavilion pass; each gets you into the General Sessions for whatever day(s) you attend, but not Technical Sessions nor BOFs, unfortunately. And I cannot give two 1D passes to one person, they catch that and kick it back to me. )
