Java.net Community Corner 2005 - Booth 527 in the Pavilion

Note that this page is written in the present tense because it is an archive, not an historical review. See also the CommunityCorner for this year.

This year at JavaOne, the java.net community will have a large booth in the JavaOne Pavilion. We will be using the area to do several things:

  • Allow project owners to demo their software or present their projects (see #MiniTalks below)
  • Meet your community leaders (see the #StaffingCalendar below) and put names with faces in the continuous #SlideShow between mini-talks
  • Learn about how to use java.net tools and how to manage your open source project
  • Hear about collaborative projects on java.net that are not open source
  • Learn about the java.net Partner Network
  • Showcase java.net communities, including JDDAC, Java Tools, Global Education and Learning Community, Embedded Java Community, and others.

java.net Community Corner volunteers: be sure to fill out your #ShirtSize below!

This is a wiki, so don't be afraid to edit it!!! (Twiki newbies can use Help for getting started information) If you have a mini-talk to propose, or if you are supposed to work some shifts at one of the three pods in the Community Corner, edit this page now to sign up!

Presentation/Demo Signups and Calendar: Mini-Talks of 20 minutes each

Directions:

  1. Propose a short talk or demo by adding it to the schedule below. In the Status column, put: "Proposed for xxxx community," where xxxx is the name of the java.net Community that you belong to (or general if your project is in no community).
  2. Make the byline a link to your People page, and make sure your People page includes your java.net id so that we can reach you by email. (If you don't have a People page, go make one now, please!)
  3. Send an email to your community leader asking them to accept your proposal. Include whether or not you are flexible on the time to present. (For the general projects area, send the email to communitymanager@dev.java.net.)
  4. Community leader may ask questions, then accept or reject.
    1. accept: community leader changes the Status comment to: "Accepted by clname", where clname is a link to his/her People page
    2. reject: community leader notifies submitter and removes entry from wiki, clearing the space for another proposal
  5. If accepted, you must add a wiki page for the talk or demo describing it
  6. Project and microphone are available for speakers. If you prefer not to bring your own laptop, just post it in the java-net project.
  7. Speakers must arrive at the java.net pod 10 minutes before their presentation to set-up.

Each talk is 20 minutes long. Need a pass to get in to JavaOne? A limited number of Pavilion passes (15) are available for non-Sun staff working to staff the java.net Community Corner pods. See the schedule below, and if you need the pass, contact the communitymanager@dev.java.net (MarlaParker).

Update: added slots on the half-hour for more flexibility and opportunity. Please invite java.net members who will attend JavaOne to propose a mini-talk.

A Picture is Worth 1000 Words

In between the mini-talks in the java.net Community Corner, we will run a slide show on the plasma screen. In addition to showing pretty pictures of boats deploying sensors and scientists remotely checking out San Francisco Bay water quality, we'd like to show pictures of groups of developers who work together on more java.net projects, Community Leaders, screen shots (maybe?), and anything else related to java.net that our producer thinks would look good.

Log in to your java.net account. Go to under the java-net project in Documentss & files in the 2005 JavaOne slide show folder. Click on Suggest a file to submit your pictures (with names listed separately or on the picture) to be considered in our slideshow!

Community Leader and Staff Calendar: Pod Staffing Signups

This calendar shows the times that community members/leaders will be in the booth to meet and greet the community. See also the official schedule on the JavaOne site.

Two staffers per pod per shift. Update! Make the name a link to your People page, and make sure your People page includes your java.net id so that we can reach you by email. (If you don't have a People page, go make one now, please!)

Update! Make the name a link to your People page, and make sure your People page includes your java.net id so that we can reach you by email. (If you don't have a People page, go make one now, please!)

Need a pass to get in to JavaOne? A limited number of Pavilion passes (15) are available for non-Sun staff working to staff the java.net Community Corner pods. Sign up to work in the above table, then contact the communitymanager@dev.java.net (MarlaParker). Minimum guidelines for possibly earning this free pass are: be a java.net members; give a mini-talk and work a couple of shifts, or work three or more shifts. Community manager decisions related to these passes will be based on objective criteria, subjective whim, and reasoned arguments from community leaders or other java.net members who wish to advocate on your behalf.
