Here's a great place for voicing all your windows managment ideas, such as tiling or positioning etc.
In a 2D space the user is limited to the application in front of them. The user must minimize the current application in order to get to an application completely hidden behind. In a 3D space the user should be able to zoom into applications behind the current application through a mouse button + keyboard action. The only problem this posses is with the live background. It would be very difficult for developers to construct a complete 3D space. This may become possible in the near future with dual core processors and more powerful video cards. However, I recommend that as user zoom into the screen they are able to select applications to bring to the front. While the user is zooming into the screen the background will also be zoomed into as well. This should give the illusion that a 3D space actually exists. When the user is through selecting the applications he/she wants the computer will bring it to the front in a non-overlapping format. (qgonjon)
It would be nice to click on the computer icon on the left side of the taskbar and get a 3D representation of all your applications. It will work more or less like the different themes LG3D? has on the right side. A 3D background image of stacked folders will appear. Each stacked folder will be labeled with application categories, for example, Accessories, Games, Graphics, etc.. When you click a stack folder you will zoom close to it and the folder will open up with a list of applications. Of course you can then click on applications and it will appear on the desktop theme you had previously. Some userful functions would be:
1. A right mouse click when zoomed into the folder with the list of application will zoom out to see all the other folders. And another right mouse click again will take you back to your desktop theme you initially started at.
2. A middle mouse click on an application will bring up a short menu with actions, for example, an action can place an icon on the taskbar, another action could place an icon on the desktop, another could delete the icon from the menu, and so on.
So, that's my idea of a 3D desktop environment. (qgonjon)

Playing along with the current window-function of tiling them we could do some exposé like function, where they're zoomed out to like 30-40% when they're tiled. It think it would make tiling a lot of windows a whole lot easier. As well as moving the tiled windows long the X-axis (up and down isn't it?) (ddew)
