LinkedIn Usage Information

Looking up other JUG Leaders is the most obvious way to take advantage of the JUG Leaders group on LinkedIn. Once you have joined the group, you can use the See All Members link to get a listing of all the JUG Leaders that are members of the group. This link will be to the right of our group logo (Duke and Juggy giving the thumbs up sign) in the groups section of your LinkedIn home page. The groups section of the home page is typically in the lower right corner of the home page layout. Unless you have a lot of screen real estate, you may need to scroll down because this section may be below the fold for the initial display of your LinkedIn home page.

Using Search Refinement

When you use the group to get a listing of all members, you get a paged result with only 10 people listed per page. However, you can use the Refine Search button prominently displayed at the top of the paged results to further constrain the search. For example, you can constrain the search to only JUG Leaders from a particular country. You can also search by name, company (current and/or in the past), job title, keywords, industry, etc...

Finally, we will assume you found a particular JUG Leader that you would like to network with. The first thing you do is click on their name in the list of results and that will take you to view their full LinkedIn profile. From there, you have several options:

  • You can invite the person to connect directly to you on LinkedIn. If you know their email address, you can use that in conjunction with the Add To Your Network link at the top of their profile.

  • You can introduce yourself to the person directly. Even if you do not know their email address, you can still contact them from their user profile in a roundabout manner. Scroll to the bottom of their user profile and choose the Contact Directly button you will find there. Because of your shared JUG Leaders group affiliation, you will be allowed to send an email directly to the person without having to know their email address. The LinkedIn service will serve as middle person and send the email to them for you. If the recipient accepts this LinkedIn introduction via email, then they will share their email address with you as a result of accepting the introduction.

  • You can get introduced to the person through shared intermediate connections. Get Introduced Through A Connection is another prominent link at the top of user profiles. When you click that link, any intermediate connections between the two of you will be listed and you will have the option to choose which of those intermediate connections to go through to contact the person.

  • You can forward the profile to another LinkedIn user that you are directly connected to. For example, I may want to introduce one JUG Leader that is directly connected to me to another JUG Leader (who is not directly connected to me). One way to accomplish this is to forward the profile of the one JUG Leader to the other JUG Leader.

  • You can print user profiles to printer or to PDF files. There are prominent links at the top of use profiles to do this.

Privacy of Direct Connections is Preserved

Participation in the JUG Leaders LInkedIn group does not compromise the privacy of your existing direct connections on LinkedIn. Participation in the group does make your profile visible to all other group members though. It also makes it easy for other group members to subsequently invite you to directly connect with them. However, it is completely within your individual control to either accept or reject group initiated invitations to connect with another JUG Leader.
