Q. I am starting a new JUG, or my JUG needs a new website. Can we be part of java.net?
A. To get your JUG hosted at java.net - which will automatically bring it into the JUG listing - go to:
http://www.java.net/request_project.html - At "Choose a community you'd like to join:" choose Java User Groups.

Q. I am a JUG leader - how can I get my JUG listed on java.net?
A. If you do not wish to have your JUG hosted at java.net but still want to be in the JUG listing, create a Linked JUG by following instructions here:
http://www.java.net/linking.csp
There isn't any difference between a linked JUG and a hosted JUG as far as benefits are concerned. Hosted JUGs are mostly for new JUGs that don't have an existing website and would like to take advantage of the forums,mailing lists, etc. that java.net offers.

Q. How do I join a JUG?
A. Go to Java.net JUGs listing to browse the JUGs here then go to their projects site to request project membership role. Or Search for a JUG to find a JUG in your area. There might be more than one JUG in your immediate area, so it is helpful to look at their website (if available) or contact the JUG leader to find out more about the group's focus and style.

Q. How can I start a sub-project of an existing JUG?
A. Follow these steps:
1. Go here - Request a Project - http://www.java.net/request_project.csp
2. Follow the first two steps under "Starting a New Project"
3. At step #3, begin to fill out the first form page -
- Under "Choose a community you'd like to join": choose Java User Groups
- Put yourself as the Project Manager
- Under "Other Notes or Comments", ask to make your project a sub-project of the "parent" JUG you want yours to be under
4. Fill out page 2 (Warning: do not use the back button while filling this page)
- here you can choose the parent project from a list
- be sure the 'Use project index.html' box is checked
- submit "Create Project" and your new project page will display
5. A community leader will see this request and if necessary, "re-parent" your new project appropriately.
They will approve it and send a confirmation email to both the parent project leader and you.

A. Due to java.net's terms of use agreement (sections d. and e.), the use of java.net's site infrastructure will be
unavailable to users located in certain embargoed countries. For more information about the embargoed

Q. Does Sun require JUGs to register on java.net?

"....As Community Manager, I want to reiterate the point that we in no way expect or require JUGs to be hosted on java.net, and JUGs in particular and projects in general that are "only" linked projects, meaning that they are listed in our Projects Directory but they are hosted elsewhere and have our java.net member button somewhere on the home page, are still absolutely considered part of the aggregated java.net community.
For JUGs, the most substantial benefit of being a member of java.net (linked or hosted) is that you are in the same community as Sun's JUG Program, which means you get better communications with Aaron. That alone seems worth the bother of joining and putting the member button on your site...."
