Java Women Network proposal [DRAFT]

The Java™ Women Network promotes collaboration amongst women who develop and use Java Technology to increase the visibility of women's contribution, mentoring opportunities and professional networking.

The purpose of this wiki is to collaborate on a charter for the group prior to proposing it as an OpenJDK™ Group.

Roadmap

Discuss the charter

  • gather input, work towards consensus
  • answer any outstanding questions
    • NOTE: the name cannot be "Java Women" alone, but must include a noun to adhere to Sun's Trademark Policy
    • NOTE: the URL (after the slash) can be just javawomen or java-women

Propose the "Java Women Network" OpenJDK group

  • This group makes sense to be part of the OpenJDK community
  • Follow the process on http://openjdk.java.net/groups/
  • Need to recruit 3 Sun Java Women engineers

  • Make proposal to the OpenJDK announce list

Women in Computing resources

    Duchess is a networking group for female Java developers. We are based in the Netherlands, but every Java-coding girl can join.

  • Fedora Women http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Women
    Fedora Women aims to provide a central forum and point of support for the often under-represented side of Fedora's Community.

  • Debian Women http://women.debian.org/
    We will promote women's involvement in Debian by increasing the visibility of active women, providing mentoring and role models, and creating opportunities for collaboration with new and current members of the Debian Project. We welcome the involvement of all people who are interested in increasing the participation of women in Debian.

  • Ubuntu-Women http://ubuntu-women.org/
    Ubuntu-Women is the first step in trying to usher in change by increasing the visibility and contribution of women by providing mentoring and role models, and creating opportunities for collaboration with new and existing Ubuntu volunteers.

    LinuxChix is a community for women who like Linux, and for anyone who wants to support women in computing and has two core rules: "be polite" and "be helpful".
