< < | The Java Mobile & Embedded Developer Days are about learning, sharing, and networking - of course, the best way to take part is to attend the conference in person. But we realize many folks may not be able to travel to California so in an effort to make the conference accessible to the worldwide community we are planning to stream the entire conference live and worldwide for free. | > > | The Java Mobile & Embedded Developer Days are about learning, sharing, and networking - of course, the best way to take part is to attend the conference in person.
But we realize many folks may not be able to travel to California so in an effort to make the conference accessible to the worldwide community we are planning to stream the entire conference live and worldwide for free.
Broadcast Set-Up Information, Schedule, and Channels
For all the details see the conference broadcast page. | | | Broadcast technology | | | However, after further research into the topic it appears that all hosted, live, low-cost video streaming solutions use proprietary technologies (at least as far as we know). JavaFX, with it's design for media-driven applications and cross-platform media support will make the creation of such streaming solutions much easier but it is still quite early in the game as JavaFX was released just a few weeks ago. Until then our options for live broadcasting solutions are, unfortunately, limited.
In summary: We'd love to switch away from proprietary technologies and we believe there will be Java-based solutions available in 2009 but right now we plan to stick with ustream because of it's availability, ease of use, scalability, and cost-effectiveness. If you have questions or suggestions please email us at interest@developerdays.dev.java.net. | |
< < | How To View The Broadcast:
- Make sure you have the latest version of the Adobe Flash player installed
- To test your set-up go to the ustream.tv home page and try to view an existing video stream
- During conference, go to the Java Mobile & Embedded Developer Days ustream conference page to view the conference broadcast
- You will see two channels: one for the Auditorium track and one for the track in the upstairs room. Click on the one you want to see.
Audience Participation
ustream offers remote viewers ways to interact in conjunction with a particular video channel. As viewers of the channel you can chat with other viewers, you can participate in polls, and you can signal your approval. See the ustream help center for more information. You can also post questions and feedback and we will have moderators forward your input into the live sessions as appropriate and practical to enable remote audience participation. To join in the chat you will need a ustream ID (sign up here).
Important Note
We are broadcasting the event on a best-effort basis. Quality and availability of the broadcast are not guaranteed and are subject to technical limitations. We will be monitoring the broadcast throughout the event and will attempt to provide the best possible service but please be understanding if we experience technical problems.
Viewing talks at a later time
All talks will be recorded for later viewing. It will take us two or three weeks to process the videos. Check back at the conference home page for information and links. |

Broadcast technology
For last year's conference we used ustream.tv. It worked very well, was easy to set up, and is free for both the organizers (us) and the attendees (you).
However, ustream uses proprietary video encoding and playback technology (Adobe Flash). Some of our viewers criticized that and asked why we aren't using open video formats and Java-based playback. Good point and we fully agree that this is the direction that should be taken.
However, after further research into the topic it appears that all hosted, live, low-cost video streaming solutions use proprietary technologies (at least as far as we know).
