Background Info and Research
More intro
The Microfinance Industry is characterized by high volume transactions, group solidarity lending, and field operations in economically poor rural locations. This environment makes the MicroFinance Institutions (MFIs) market niche difficult to support with commercial portfolio management and accounting products. At the same time, the grassroots philosophy, low margins, and innovative tendencies of the emerging microfinance industry make it a good match for Open Source systems development. Moreover, the lack of data standards makes long term financing more difficult and prevents necessary collaboration within the sector for credit checks, securitization, and poverty impact assessment.
Although numerous vendors have established themselves to serve this market, the lack of any industry data standards enforces a captive vendor-customer relationship and exacerbates an already difficult decision for MFIs to build or to buy. Given the market dynamics, many MFIs choose to build their own systems. It is therefore not uncommon to see inadequate systems that have been creatively applied to the problem domain but with severely negative impacts for workflow efficiency and scalability. For instance, a common platform for these solutions is Access DB™ and Visual Basic ™, with the inherent difficulties in those tools for creating highly scalable, distributed data environments, with connections to numerous data consumers.
< < | This project will address these issues by developing an architectural framework for components, stand-alone software components and tools that fit operational requirements of MFIs, and data standards for internal and external communication of data and report information. | > > | Quick Links
< < | Supported by Grameen Foundation USA (GFUSA) and involving other industry players, the Mifos project builds on the MicrofinanceInnovations of GFUSA.
< < | Beyond this content, the Mifos project uses the base tools of java.net and of sourceforge.net including the CVS for code-check-in, tasking, and the listservs. Note that as a wiki site, the content is always "under development", so some parts will appear incomplete.

> > | The MicrofinanceIndustry is characterized by high volume transactions, group solidarity lending, and field operations in economically poor rural locations.
This project will address these issues by developing an architectural framework for components, stand-alone software components and tools that fit operational requirements of MFIs, and data standards for internal and external communication of data and report information.
Supported by Grameen Foundation USA(GFUSA) and involving other industry players, the Mifos project builds on the MicrofinanceInnovations of GFUSA. | | | Beyond this content, the Mifos project uses the base tools of java.net and of sourceforge.net including the CVS for code-check-in, tasking, and the listservs. Note that as a wiki site, the content is always "under development", so some parts will appear incomplete.
