X11 Application Sharing Notes
Dev5 Release Notes
Because the implementation is preliminary, there are some restrictions you must observe, as well as several bugs to be aware of. Here are some of the main restrictions/limitations. (For others, see the app sharing bugs in the bug list).
- The server needs to be running on Linux. (Some people have reported that X11 shared apps run on Solaris but the core team has not yet observed this).
- You can only run one X11 app at a time. However, you may run this with any number of other Wonderland share-aware apps (such as the SVG whiteboard).
- There is no reliable way to quit an app, except for doing a cold or warm start of the server.
- Apps do not survive warm start. After a warm start the app must be manually restarted.
- Apps come up stuck in the floor. Click right and select Edit to bring up the cell affordances in order to bring it out of the floor.
- As in Wonderland 0.4, clicking Shift-Left on the window frame or interior takes control of the app. While you have control of the app your keyboard and mouse input are sent to the app and do not control the avatar.
- Right now, the only working way to release control of an app is to Shift-Left click on the left, right, or bottom side of the window frame. (It is recommended that you only take control of an app when you can see its window frame, because if you are too close to the app and cannot click on the frame there currently is no way to release control).
- Popup menus appearing for the first time come up significantly slower than on Wonderland 0.4.
All of the above limitations are bugs and will be hopefully be addressed before the final release of 0.5. However, the following limitations are at this time not expected to be fixed in the final release and therefore will be features of this release. These may be addressed in future Wonderland releases.
- You will need to use cell affordances to rotate the main window. And you will not be able to rotate secondary windows (e.g. the firefox preference dialog) independently of the main window.
- You must run the shared application server (SAS) on the same machine as the Darkstar server.
- You may run only one SAS.
